What To Do About Indoor Plant Insects

A number of insects flourish on our indoor plants rather than the outdoor ones because the central heating, the micro-climate and the lack of predators makes it an ideal setting for them. When you become conscious of an infestation of these insects, you should take immediate steps to eradicate them, before they spread to the remainder of your indoor plants.

These indoor insects can breed and spread incredibly fast in the ideal conditions of your living room. One of the most common groups of indoor insect pests are the spider mites. Spider mites come in a variety of colours, depending where you live, but the most common colours are red, green and yellow.

Spider mites are extremely small and so not easy to see, but they can instigate the leaves to fall off your plants, which will soon kill it. If you think that you have a problem with these spider mites, you should hold a piece of dark card under a leaf and then flick the leaf. If you have mites, some will drop onto the card.

These pests belong to the family of spiders and ticks and can be killed fairly easily with an suitable spray. Ask in your gardening shop for either a systemic insect killer or a natural method, if you prefer. The only stipulation is that you will have to act fast, if you have them.

Shell insects are very small, but, under magnification, look like blobs of wax on the plant’s stem. They are sucking the sap out of you plants and they breed very quickly too, if they are left to go unchecked. These insects will not destroy your plants rapidly because they are after a prolonged source of food, but as their numbers increase, they will eventually kill their host. Insecticide is the only known treatment for shell insects.

Mealy bugs are a lot bigger and are easily visible to the naked eye, but they do not necessarily look like animals. Rather, they look like strands of cotton in a cluster on your plant. There are two methods of dealing with mealy bugs, you can either wash them off first with water and then spray to prevent a further infestation or just spray and eradicate them with the spray.

It can take a few weeks to get rid of any of these indoor insects, because they could be anywhere and there will be eggs waiting to hatch out – possibly in the pot plant’s soil. Anyway, once you know that you have a problem, just stay with it until your plant recovers.

One of the first signs that you will have that you have an plague of something is that your plant will start to look sick and when it has recovered, you can be pretty sure that the insects have been eradicated as well.

One thing to make a note of here is that these pests normally only get a toehold with plants that are out of sorts anyway. This frequently comes to mean that they are getting too much water, although there can be other causes also.

All New For 2010 – LED Grow Light Review

The indoor gardening world was rocked a few years ago with the introduction of LED grow lights. In the midst of controversy, many questions arose as to whether or not they could give true results and live up to the hype. By putting in a bit of research, you can plainly see that, not only do LED grow lights deliver, but they are here to stay.

The most important concept to understand about LED grow lights is that you are swapping the brute-force tactics used by metal halide and high pressure sodium grow lights for the gentle strength and simplicity of the technological break-through of LED grow lights.

When typically using HID grow lights – with all the associated (expensive) accessories such as heat ducting, extraction fans, ballasts, and so on – the entire white light spectrum is emitted. With wavelengths from red to blue and in between, plants get the benefit of light while getting attacked by excessive heat. Not many people think about how efficient this method is. At only about 15% efficiency, HID grow lights throw away most of its energy in the form of non-absorbable light and plant-killing heat. That is just money down the drain.

The highest quality LED grow lights enjoy a 95% efficiency rating which means that almost all of the light is beneficial to your plants and can directly help them grow. Nearly none of the light is wasted and the heat they produce is negligible. Only with years of research and development can determine which specific wavelengths are targeted to produce energy usable in photosynthesis. Blue and red light are the most important for growing plants while, to a lesser extent, orange is also needed. This makes sense because plants are green. On a scientific level, this means that plants reflect green and yellow light to such an extent that those wavelengths are nearly useless for growing plants. You have to ask yourself, why buy a grow light that wastes energy on producing those wavelengths?

To be sure, choosing the right LED grow light for your indoor garden has its challenges. Just like any other product in existence there is a wide range of quality represented by the various brands available on the market. From the very basic models up to the Mercedes of LED grow lights, styles range in price, shape, light colors, and power output that all play a part in determining your success as an indoor grower. I can tell you from experience that, for the most part, you get what you pay for.

I am not telling you that you must buy the most expensive model you can find because cost is not the sole factor that determines quality. It is the composition of the LED grow light and the quality of the components used in its construction that is the real factor.

What you need to look for in an LED grow light is the power of each individual LED bulb. It is common to find 225 LED grow panels for sale very cheap – around $50-$100, however, you would totally waste your money. Each bulb in such an array typically has only 0.06 Watts. This is severely underpowered – unless of course you only want to grow a 4 inch tall plant. Because of the lack of power, you will get poor results, no canopy penetration, spindly plants, and some plants just wont grow or flower at all. The minimum power output to look for is 1 Watt per bulb – about 16 times more output than “bargain” LED grow lights and you are still saving a ton of money in electricity.

With the powerful, highly-targeted light from a high-quality LED grow light, you will experience thick, stocky vegetative growth with massive blooms and the biggest yields possible when growing indoors.

Hydroponic Gardening Equipment for Flowers

Using premium cultivation equipment and keeping a soilless system well kept up is essential for raising impressive plants. In order to grow premium plants it is needed to provide them with high quality food.

Soilless cultivation has turned out to be an excellent method for cultivating many different types of herbs but it only works if it is used along with good supplies. Of special importance are the hydroponic nutrients utilized to nourish the crops and the kind of growing medium.

These two aspects are extremely critical and should be chosen with the type of crops being cultivated in mind. Regulation supplies must also be used so that an appropriate cultivation environment can be maintained during cultivation.

Herbs get the compounds they require to grow from minerals found in nature. To provide grow room crops with the food they need different minerals such as calcium and nitrates must be given. Various minerals can be mixed in different concentrations to make ideal nutrient solutions for any flowers.

Although certain hydroponics methods suspend a herbs root system in water there are lots of variations that use an inert material to assist solution delivery. Growing mediums can help nutrient solution reach a plants root system without drowning them and should act as a foundation for growth.

Several widely used growing mediums are perlite, coir, and gravel. Depending on the flows being grown and any special needs growers might have there are many options for cultivation medium such as diahadro, sand, wood fiber and other materials.

Maintaining stable grow room conditions is vital for herbs to flourish. The lighting required to run a grow room can make a lot of heat and action must be taken to effectively air out all grow spaces. Depending and the specific layout of a grow room normally fans are required to keep a suitable cultivation environment.

Regular maintenance is also required to make sure that no disease attack the flowers. Depending on the plant type being grown changes to the environment may be needed during cultivation.
