Ebb and Flow System
Ebb and flow is one of the most common hydroponic systems used by gardeners. It is also known as the flood and drain method and is liked by growers because of its simplicity, convenience, reliability, and low start up costs.
Ebb and flow systems can be used to grow a range of different plants and be scaled to accommodate bigger crop sizes. The cultivation method consists of arranging tanks and pumps so they create a closed system. A tank that holds solution is normally placed above a grow tank holdings an inert medium and plants. According to a timing system solution is realized from the upper tank to soak the plants and growth medium. Any solution that is not absorbed by the roots or held in the medium is collected in a tank. When the water reaches a predetermined level in the lower tank it is pumped back to the upper reservoir and the process repeats.
Ebb and Flow is Easy to Manage
The ebb and flow system is easy to manage because:
- only one tank of solution needs to be regulated
- nutrient solution provides all the food and nourishment plants need for growth
- flooding and draining schedule dictates how much oxygen it receives.
The systems to keep a regular flooding schedule can be complicated depending on the size and complexity of the grow system. For small indoor gardens simple single pump designs should suffice.
Ebb and Flow Produce Quality Plants
- alternating exposure to fresh air and nutrients is what helps plants grow quickly and produce large yields
- exposure times depend on the amount of solution in the system, the growth medium, and the grow tank size
- depending on the watering needs of the plants being grow pumps can be set up to run throughout the day or daily.
