In order to install a complete hydroponic system there are several components that must be considered; an irrigation method, grow medium, lighting, and regulation of the environment.

Grow Medium

One of the most important aspects of any hydroponic system is the medium. Hydroponics means using only water as a grow medium instead of soil, however some systems use inert substances as grow mediums. All hydroponics uses special nutrient rich concentrations to feed plants. Some systems suspend a plants roots in solution or a solution mist while others deliver the solution via inert substances including diahadro, expanded clay, rock wool, coir, perlite, vermiculite, sand, gravel, brick shards,wood fibre.

Hydroponic Irrigation Systems

Hydroponic designs that suspend roots in water alone can either be continuous flow systems or static systems. No matter the grow medium solution can either be delivered up from below wth subirrigation or from above in top irrigation. There are several methods intended to regulate both nutrient and oxygen delivery called aeroponics, passive subirrigation, ebb and flow, top irrigation, and deep water culture.

Lighting is an important aspect of every hydroponic system and will impact crop size, timing, and quality. The most common types of lights used for indoor gardening are fluorescent lights, LED lights, high pressure sodium lights, and metal halide lights. These lights can be used in combination to achieve optimum results.

Hydroponic Supplies

Beyond providing your plants with the nutrients and light they need it is also important to ensure that the environment remains appropriate for them. This means that air is circulated, adequate gas levels, proper temperature and humidity, and no pests or fungus. Even the best set ups must be maintained throughout the entire growth process to make sure any problems that may happen are quickly fixed.
