MH lights are HID lights and are used by growers because of their ability to produce very strong lighting. They give off light along the higher area of the light spectrum. These longer wavelength of light are usually used by growers during the growth phase.
The longer wavelength light is helpful for crops to develop a sturdy foundation especially leafs and stems. It is crucial for plants to have a strong structure so they can support the big buds produced by hydroponic techniques.
Growers will often pair MH lights with other types of grow lamps to give plants different wavelengths of light. During the vegetative phase many growers will remove metal halide lights and instead use only short wavelength light which encourages large buds.
