High pressure sodium lights emit extremely intense light and are considered HID bulbs. They are used to produce very large crop yields in indoor growing operations.

High Pressure Sodium Bulb
High pressure sodium bulbs are another kind of high intensity discharge, HID, lamp and are popular with growers and create a very intense light along the red range of the light spectrum.
The smaller wavelength red light is normally efficiently used by herbs when flowering. Gardeners often report substantially larger crops when they apply high pressure sodium lamps throughout later grow stages. HPS lights only create shorter wavelength light.
If only high pressure sodium bulbs are used throughout a herbs early life growth will be longer and quicker. These flowers will unlikely be able to support the large buds growers want. Many gardeners will only apply this kind of bulb throughout later grow phases.
